In this edition of M•Talks, organised by Magnus Commodities, Felipe Gracia interviews José Ignacio Sanz, CEO of TotalEnergies Spain. The conversation offers an in-depth look at the strategic transformation of one of the world’s major oil companies towards the electricity sector. Sanz explains that the company’s rebranding in 2021 was not merely cosmetic, but the reflection of a clear vision: electricity will dominate the 21st century in the same way that oil dominated the 20th. This shift has turned Spain into a priority market for the company, moving from marginal interest due to its lack of fossil fuels to becoming strategically relevant thanks to its immense potential in renewable energy, particularly solar and wind.

During the interview, Sanz addresses the current challenges facing the sector with pragmatism, such as the collapse of solar energy prices during the central hours of the day. In response to this problem, he puts forward hybridisation, flexibility and, above all, storage as key solutions. In this regard, he highlights TotalEnergies’ competitive advantage in owning its subsidiary Saft, a European leader in battery manufacturing with experience even in space missions. The conversation also underlines the importance of Artificial Intelligence and data centres as imminent drivers of electricity demand — an opportunity that Spain is uniquely positioned to seize. Sanz concludes by reaffirming the inescapable commitment to decarbonisation, while warning of the need for Europe to protect its industrial competitiveness against powers such as the United States, China and India.
